Who am I?
The Full Story
I’m Jakita known affectionately as Dr. T. I’m Melvin and Cora’s daughter, and I’m a mother of three beautiful children (two sons and a daughter), a professor, business owner, and a healer, empath, creative, and manifesting generator at heart. I’m new to sharing my life with the internet, but I’ve often been told that my journey has inspired others, so on this page you’ll mostly find how you can actively love, care for, value, and heal yourself because that’s what I’ve come through and to, and because that’s where my focus remains: a calm nervous system, letting my work be worship, and maintaining my joy while releasing my fears.
Nine years ago, after reaching the highest point in my professional career of receiving a commendation from President Barack Obama for my research and after accepting a dream job at a major R1 university, I lost my beloved mother. My biggest cheerleader and most staunch supporter. It was the greatest loss I’ve experienced to date. My mother always poured into me as I poured into others. I remember wondering, “I’ve got everyone else - who’s got me now?” I felt untethered for a long time, and things got really dark. Yet, through that loss, I found clarity, healing, and I accepted and nurtured my spiritual gift as an empath. As I healed, I noticed and felt the pain and sadness in others.
God told me that he would take me on a journey back to the essence of who he created me to be. He showed me that I was always a teacher, but who I would teach and what I would teach would require me to fully surrender to and embrace my spiritual gifts of healer, empath, and manifesting generator. God carried me through and moved me to acceptance around my mother’s death and boldly into my true calling as healer and empath.
He also showed me that my partner and I were no longer meant to be together. Through that journey of uncleaving, he showed me that my life was meant to expand beyond what I was receiving in that partnership. He showed me how to come home to myself. He revealed to me that everything I’d searched for externally had actually been inside of me all along: safety, security, provision, and protection. I only needed to slow down, do less, and tap back into the essence of who I truly am and what I truly need to be whole, healthy, peaceful, and joyous.
Today, I’m living a beautiful, soft life - not softness as superficial. Not softness as aesthetic. Not softness as avoidance. But softness as scaffolding around which I could build a life that nourished me. That sustained me. That protected me from burnout. That poured into me so I can show up fully as a woman, a daughter, a mother, a sister-friend, a healer, an empath, a creative…and most importantly, as a divinely perfectly imperfect human being. I’m living a life more fulfilling than I could have ever imagined. I get to show my children (especially my daughter) what a happy, whole, thriving mother looks like. I get to provide for my family and me through my spiritual gifts and through my fourth baby, my business, love(self), and I get to live a more simple and sacred life that truly nourishes, sustains, and is in service to my mind, body, spirit, and soul. I have worked hard for this life, and the inner work hasn’t always been easy. There are times its been downright scary. Yet, I’ve walked up and through every one of those fears and come out the other side more whole, more joyous, more free, and more me.
It’s time to come home to yourself, and it all starts with you.
You are the love of your life.
Welcome home!
